Why do kids need computers and such?

The emphasis, today, is on giving every child a laptop. This is the strategy to combat illiteracy. I graduated third grade in 1974. My school was built in 1865. I learned to read and write. Literacy is free; it doesn't cost anything but time and effort. Albert Einstein went to public schools and never had access to laptops . Why do we emphasize technology over education?
