Ok....settle this once and for all. Does Joaquin Phoenix have a cleft lip or is it a birthmark as he states?

I think he was born with a cleft lip or 'hare lip'. He is on record as saying it's only a birthmark. Which is true and what source do you have to back it up? Thanks.
